Course Overview

This course will help institutions and individuals better manage the mental health challenges of being a healthcare worker.  Healthcare providers address the mental health needs of their staff through several initiatives intended to help build resilience and to provide respite from the demands of their work.

The primary purpose of this course was to document and explain lessons learned with the hopes of informing healthcare institutions and healthcare workers about effective strategies and why they work.Organizations and teams should encourage staff to care for their own psychological health and safety, including encouraging them to take breaks and vacations. Psychological self-care should be promoted and embedded into the organizational and team culture.

Staff should be able to perform their roles with a sense of integrity and the support of their profession, employer, and peers. Along with psychological self-care, this factor is especially critical in health-care settings. Organizations and teams can protect staff from moral distress by showing support during adverse situations, ensuring that staff has the human resources and equipment to provide quality care, providing access to bioethics consultations and training, and developing policies and guidelines to address morally distressing events

Course Overview
Addressing mental health stigma requires a comprehensive and compassionate approach that blends community education, personal growth, and institutional support. Our community’s new initiative, featuring three interactive events over six months, aims to raise awareness about mental health—especially among youth—by challenging misconceptions and encouraging open dialogue. Recognizing the alarming rates of mental health disorders, substance abuse, and suicide among young people, the initiative stresses the importance of social connection, professional support, and accessible resources. Beyond awareness, it advocates for cultivating inner peace through mindfulness, meditation, journaling, and gratitude practices, which are essential for emotional resilience and overall well-being. It also highlights the impact of burnout, emotional exhaustion, and compassion fatigue—particularly among healthcare professionals - and emphasizes the vital role of early intervention, Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), and leadership in creating supportive work environments.
